This year\u2019s theme focuses on creating spaces where young people can innovate, lead and shape their own futures.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\"><strong>At UWC, we believe education should give young people the confidence to make a difference wherever they come from. Leontina Trajkoska, a student from Macedonia now studying at UWC Costa Rica, is doing just that. Drawing on her experience of growing up in alternative care \u2013 care arranged by the state for children who can\u2019t live with their families \u2013 she\u2019s working to help others feel better supported as they move into adult life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drawing-upon-personal-experience\" style=\", sans-serif\">Drawing upon personal experience<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">The idea for Leontina\u2019s project began with something she heard that struck a deep chord. \u201c<em>I once heard a social worker describe how some young people in foster care inherit debts they never chose \u2013 and how, the moment they come of age, not a single penny from their first job ever reaches their bank account because&nbsp;debt collectors get there first<\/em>,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">\u201c<em>That stayed with me. Because it isn\u2019t just about money \u2013 it\u2019s about what happens when you enter adulthood already trapped<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">Leontina had seen how young people in care were expected to handle complex adult responsibilities&nbsp;<em>\u2013<\/em>&nbsp;like signing a lease, managing a budget or dealing with unexpected costs&nbsp;<em>\u2013<\/em>&nbsp;without the support that many others take for granted. \u201c<em>I felt invisible to the systems around me, yet completely responsible<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201c<em>That experience sparked the idea: what if I could equip others in care with the financial knowledge I wish I had<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bridging-the-gap\" style=\", sans-serif\">Bridging the gap<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwc.org\/_site\/data\/files\/images\/E267ADBD0F6EFF15A23B27DB401C0A1D.jpg\" width=\"50%\">\u201c<em>There\u2019s often a misconception that financial literacy is common sense, but that assumes you\u2019ve had someone to guide you<\/em>,\u201d Leontina explains. \u201c<em>In alternative care, many of us grow up without a safety net or practical preparation for independent life<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">She noticed that even the most motivated and capable of her peers lacked access to practical tools \u2014 things like understanding a payslip, creating a savings plan or avoiding financial scams. \u201c<em>The gap wasn\u2019t potential \u2013 it was opportunity.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">With the support of a UWC GoMakeADifference grant \u2013 a programme that provides small grants to help UWC students and alumni bring community projects to life \u2013 and the IB Global Youth Action Fund, Leontina designed a programme that would respond to this need directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-skills-in-action\" style=\", sans-serif\">Skills in action<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">Leontina created and led bilingual workshops in both North Macedonia and Costa Rica, combining financial education with interactive tools, including simulations and real-time voting. \u201c<em>I designed interactive, game-based financial simulations participants could vote on in real time, facilitated bilingual workshops, recruited volunteers and created tools tailored to youth in alternative care<\/em>,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwc.org\/_site\/data\/files\/images\/F76849035BDC92886292D31F3133DE29.jpg\" width=\"50%\">She also gained new skills herself. \u201c<em>This project taught me how to move from frustration to action,\u201d she explains.&nbsp;<\/em>\u201c<em>I developed the resilience to lead across contexts, working with peers and professionals, initiating partnerships with institutions and universities, navigating cultural differences and adapting when plans shifted. Most importantly, I learned how to listen \u2013 with empathy and intention.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-lasting-connections\" style=\", sans-serif\">Making lasting connections<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">For Leontina, the most meaningful moments weren\u2019t just in the workshops, but in the conversations and connections that grew around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">\u201c<em>One participant told me, \u2018I didn\u2019t know I could ask these kinds of questions.\u2019 That stayed with me<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201c<em>The workshops weren\u2019t just about managing money \u2013 they became spaces where young people&nbsp;felt safe enough to reflect out loud, sometimes for the first time<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">Another young person asked how to apply to UWC after the session. \u201c<em>That meant a lot to me, because I know how life-changing this community can be<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">Leontina also helped reconnect two communities with shared history. Some sessions were held at SOS Children\u2019s Village Santa Ana, and others on the UWC Costa Rica campus \u2013 which, years ago, was itself an SOS Village. \u201c<em>We even organised a friendly football match between SOS youth and UWC students \u2013 not as a curated \u2018activity\u2019, but as a way to build real, mutual relationships beyond structured programmes<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-ahead\" style=\", sans-serif\">Looking ahead<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwc.org\/_site\/data\/files\/images\/53A0FFF596313D7AF65D5E21CF83313C.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">Leontina\u2019s next steps are already taking shape. This summer, she plans to expand the project to other SOS Villages globally&nbsp;and introduce small social entrepreneurship challenges to encourage youth-led innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">She\u2019s also developing a digital version of the programme and working closely with young people who took part to co-create new materials. At the same time, she\u2019s conducting research with an economics professor to better understand how young people growing up in care build skills and confidence in different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">\u201c<em>I want the project to become not only scalable, but evidence-driven<\/em>,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">Leontina and her supporters are now exploring ways to scale the initiative even further. They\u2019re looking to connect with people who have regional or financial expertise and want to help adapt the curriculum to new contexts. If you see a problem that affects you or your community, you might already have the insight to begin changing it. Skills aren\u2019t just tools, they\u2019re seeds. What you build now might grow far beyond what you imagine<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\", sans-serif\" class=\"\">She also hopes others will start to see young people growing up in alternative care differently &#8211; not just for the challenges they face, but particularly for their strengths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Young people in care are often seen through the lens of what they\u2019ve lacked, but what\u2019s often missed is what they\u2019ve gained: resilience, adaptability and a deep sense of responsibility,\u201d she says. \u201cWe don\u2019t need pity,\u00a0 we need opportunity. And when given space, we\u2019re not just capable of catching up.
